A Genome-wide Association Study in the Diabetic Patients

Article Title: A Genome-wide Association Study in the Diabetic Patients Finds the 13q35.43-35.46 Locus Associated with Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate: The Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort Study

The latest genome-wide association study (GWAS) on Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort (JMICC) implicated NBEA (neurobeachin) gene in renal function among diabetic people for the first time.

Nakamura et al. (2018) have found 77 single nucleotide variants (SNVs) upstream of NBEA that were significantly associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) among Japanese population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The study specifically identified 13q35.43-35.46 locus as having an association with renal function among the Japanese population. NBEA gene encodes one of the wide-ranging A-kinase anchor proteins that targets protein kinase activity to specific sites within the cell. Further studies were suggested to explore and decipher the biological mechanisms that connect the NBEA locus to renal function in T2DM affected people.
